What started as a little celebration a few years ago is now a week full of exciting activities in the Czech department. In all three campuses, we looked at various elements of translation and talked about languages and dialects. Czech native speakers worked hard to try to figure out English definitions of Czech untranslatable words. They also read texts written in Czech dialects and translated them into formal Czech.
We went even further and implemented other Slavic languages into our lessons. CAL students prepared texts in various languages, such as Slovak, Russian or Polish and presented them in front of Czech native speakers who tried to translate the texts into Czech. It was wonderful to hear our students speaking in their native languages.
CAL students translated children’s books, comic strips and popular songs. They explored how original songs differ from Czech adaptations by learning which songs have literal translations and where the rhythm plays a more important role. They also worked together on a translation of a book about animal communication.
Even our history lessons focused on translation and the students created beautiful bookmarks using hieroglyphs. This week showed us again how languages are important. Even now when IA is such a powerful tool, it is still crucial to have humans translating. You can still join our translation competition and send us your entries by the 11th of October.
